Hi. I'm thinking of buying a fastback Rapier or Alpine (always liked them since I was a little kid in the '70s). Looked at one for sale at a "classic car dealer" near where I live (was a scruffy-but-solid H reg white Alpine) and I was really impressed and surprised! Didn;'t buy it because I didn't trust the guy 100%, he'd also marked it up quite a bit.

I've owned (and still do) quite a few FD series Victors (restored a few), so I know about those, but don't really know what to look out for on a Fastback arrow car, in terms of rust areas, potential mechanical issues. Be grateful if you guys could give me a few pointers. I'm looking for a solid, usable, unmodified car as a weekend driver.

Cheers

Martin

Hi Martin and welcome to the forum.

Fastback rapiers are typical of the era with rust being a problem but although oe panels are almost non existent you can buy most of them aftermarket to restore all but the most crusty models.

Mechanically they are very simple and being based on the hillman hunter easy to obtain most parts with the club having a good stash!

I know for a good fastback probably for sale, I just need to check with the owner first. Car is in Devon, not sure what your search radius is?

Hi JPSH120

Thanks for your speedy reply. Good to hear most mechanicla bits are available.

I live in South Yorks (not far from Notts border), so I think Devon is a bit far and I'll be looking more in Northern England and the Midlands.

I was watching the gold one on ebay yesterday (in Derby), but the auction ended, so that was that. I'll keep looking out for one.

Ok fair enough. Worth keeping in mind though, it's a car I helped the previous owner to sell and he had owned it for many years. It's a nice example and if memory serves me right the mileage is relatively low too.

Good luck with the search!

Thanks for that, I'll bear it in mind. (I guess they are pretty rare now).

How much would I expect to pay for a condition 1 or 2 car nowadays? (Had a look on Practical Classics price guide, but I know some of their info is a bit out of date)

Practical Classics valuations have increased in the last month or 2 with the best examples now worth ~ £4.5k (H120 £6k).

To get something 'good' I would expect to pay £2.5 - £3k

As you rightly point out these are getting quite rare now, especially H120's and especially good ones!
