Hi guys, can someone please do me a favour and measure the length of the engine oil dipstick in their 1725cc engine. I am not sue whether I have the correct one in mine and I might be overfilling my sump. Thanks Jan. |

Here's a pic: The Low mark is 32mm from the end, and the high mark 57mm.

Hi, Not sure if the engine in your rapier is tilted jan? If so this might be of interest... the fastback engines are tilted, so the dipstick measures different... Here's a topic from the alpine owners club forum... http://alpine.forumup.com/about1671-alpine.html they explain it all! ;) you have to read it all... hope this helps... Thomas

Thanks Thomas, interesting link you sent me. I was wondering about guys accidentally mixing all the different engine dipsticks and also oil cooler issues, which is (or are ? ) basically answered for me now too. As a matter of interest and a bit off the topic : I have spoken to a few Rapier owners and they all say that , when hot( it gets really hot here in summer ), the engine idling oil pressure drops to 10 psi or even below, so does mine - even after engine overhaul, but it seems it is not a problem. My engine is not slanted and I had to install a modified inlet manifold to accomodate the twin webers from a H120 horisontally. regards, Jan. |

When it's tilted or not the readings are obviously different so I thought the link would be interesting, and I'm glad I helped... Thomas

Hi Derek. I measured my dipstick and there is quite an astounding differance to the one in the pic you show. Mine is 23.5 cm total length from where it rests on the engine block to the bottom point.- 35 mm shorter. The low mark is 15mm from the bottom and the high mark is 37mm from the bottom. My dipstick has 'quart' printed on it between the two notches. If the one in pic is the correct one for the 1725 engine then no wonder my timing cover seal is leaking oil although I modified it and put an oil seal in....I have also noticed that the lower the oil level gets the less drops there are after a trip, but I presumed it is my imagination. When I swopped the 1600 engine and box for the 1725 setup I remember there was more than one dipstick lying around... I will make sure and thanks again guys, hope somebody else might learn from this too... Regards Jan. |

Hi Jan, That dipstick is from the car that was my daily driver for about 17 years. But I will double check that it's the same as the my other fastback - just to make sure!
But as Thomas said - this is for an engine that is tilted over towards the dipstick. So if you use one of these on your engine you might not have enough oil and that would be bad

Ok thanks Derek. I hope it is the dipstick though, otherwise my mod was not good. Jan. |

I used to get oil pressure problems on long fast runs when using Castrol GTX mineral oil (about 10-15psi).
I switched to a full synthetic (Silkoline Pro-4) with kept the pressure at 40psi.
What sort of engine oil are you using?
