Hi,

I was wondering if anyone with experience in the following issue could help me and save me time trying to find out the problem.

I was driving my H120 the other day and just got home and as I pulled into the drive it just cut out and I had no power to the ignition (no lights etc.). After leaving for quite a while I came back to the car and turned the ignition on and got the ignition light on, however as soon as I turn to the start the engine, you get a very brief noise from the start motor but goes dead instantly with no power. Again if you leave and come back you get the same problem.

I am thinking it might be an issue with the starter motor/solenoid as before when it was running it had just generated a rough starting noise with the starter motor?!

Any help in quickly sourcing the problem will be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks,

Richard

Hi Richard,

Could indeed be the starter engine...
But check these things first!
- I suppose the battery is okay as you just drove it, but try another one anyway if possible (do the lights work without ignition on?) Bright or just a little candle?
- I would try to start the engine with jump leads directly to the starter engine, eliminating the starter solenoid, if this works it's the solenoid.
- If this doesn't work you probably have to replace the starter motor...

Hope this helps,
hope you get it solved!

I like a car that looks normal but really knocks your socks off!!

Hi Richard,

If the car is cutting out, you may have a problem with the distributor/leads etc.

Some of the electrical gremlins that affect starting the car wouldn't make it cut out?

what the guys are saying sounds logical, I might add that while you are about checking you might as well check :
your earth connections , should be two of them.
the fuses and connections - I have had things working which should not work and not working when they should and it was dirty and loose fuse connections . ( silly fuse boxes , two fuses for all those loads )
A worn ignition switch and loose connections behind the dashboard.
I still have problems with my starter too, when hot it drags heavily, I have done the bushes and brushes , everything else, but I think the armature is cooked.
cheers
Jannie.

Is your starter motor pre-engage or solenoid type?

As Jan has already pointed out, check your earth connections, especially the one on the wing mounted solenoid (if that applies to your car). The LT connector is fitted to a spade terminal, these can break off or become weak and give a rubbish connection (ask me how I know...)

As you describe that the car just cut out and wouldn't re-start my money would be on a break or short circuit somewhere, Starter motor would be my first check, after that the LT circuit.

Hope you get it fixd, good luck
Jason
