Holbay engine will have flat topped pistons, head has heart shaped combustion chambers. There are a couple of other identifiers but that's a start!

Obviously you have it stripped down, but a reasonable external identifcation is H3 or later H4 stamped on the side of the head. Standard heads tended to have H2. Don't know if you can validate yours shows H3. Cheers. Glen.

Yes, that's it AM not H! brain gone. Yes, AM2 standard, AM3 or 4 (on plug side I think!) means it's Holbay as a general rule.

Cheers. Glen.

Time to resurrect this thread! I was at a show yesterday and got talking to a couple of guys who both had series 5 alpines. Both had AM3 cylinder heads and yet (according to the owners) neither were holbay heads.

So, is this a less sure way of identifying than we thought?

Don't the engine serial numbers match the original car chassis number??

List of chassis numbers: http://www.team.net/www/rootes/chassis.html

Just a thought...

Yes, late standard cars did use AM4, but I've not heard of AM3 being used? Good old Rootes/Chrysler, nothing is hard and fast!
Good suggestion Mike re link to chassis no's, yes they do match to engine no. when new, but heads don't have such no's and can be interchanged of course. G
