Hi everyone,
I am having issues with my 1973 Fastback with twin Strombergs. I am getting intermittent starting issues when cold. My mechanic friend tells me that it is "user issues" and that i am too heavy on the choke, which leads to flooding. I am turning it over 3 to 4 times without choke (to get the fuel into the carbs). If it doesn't fire, i then it give it 1/4 to 1/2 choke. We have checked the ignition and all is working fine (good spark to plugs). In fact, it has a new distributor cap, new points, new leads etc. When it goes, it runs well. My suspicion is that the mix is too rich. Last year, I got it tuned and the guy said that he couldn't get it below 7 (whatever that means?). Do i need to get the carbs checked? Any help would be gratefully received. Many thanks. |

I always had trouble on cold mornings with Champion plugs - I threw them in the bin and put in NGK plugs instead which solved the problem.
Go for a run of a mile or two on new spark plugs then take them out and have a look at the colour of white insulator. If they are sooty black it's too rich, grey is good, black and greasy is oily (time for an engine overhaul).

I don't know what you've tried and what I'm saying might look obvious but I'm just trying to help..
- While starting give the accelerator a few punches... - If it floods floor the accelerator so enough air can come in...
It might also help to get the carbs adjusted "properly"...
I like a car that looks normal but really knocks your socks off!! |
