Hi all, I'm preparing for the rebuild of the engine for my SIV and have a problem removing the thermostat housing from the head, which is necessary as I intend to fit it to a Holbay pattern head I have. The steel studs have well and truly 'fused'with the ali body,I have tried removing the whole stud and also gentle persuasion with a rubber mallet, without success. Anyone got any ideas as I would prefer to reuse the ali body instead of a brass one which I have salvaged from a spare head I have.If I do restort to using the brass one,any comments? Regards John
Hi, have you tried using a little heat application? Heat applied directly to the bolt heads might help. I've have those bolts break off at one point resulting in plenty of fun and games with stud extractors afterwards. Heat can often help in such situations but you'll need to have access to something that will apply a good bit of it in a controllable fashion - an oxyacetalene set-up would be very useful here.
Failing that, plenty of penetrating oil and lots of time - and a fair bit of luck might help you out.
I thought I'd have one last try at removing the offending studs by welding the nuts on and applying a lot of force,I only succeeded in shearing the studs off flush with the casting.
