I have a sunbeam Rapier gearbox / overdrive unit fitted to the MK1 Zephyr engine in my 1954 Allard Palm Beach, it is a late non syncro 1st gear unit.
I have a serious oil leak that appears to be coming from the rear oil seal round the nose of the propshaft. It has had a new oilseal fitted, a modern one as I understand that the original type are no longer available
I have fitted a breather into the top of the remote control, above the oil splash plate, in case of pressure build up, no better.
I am taking the unit out this winter to try and sort it, has anyone got any ideas please?

Hi franklin,
I had a problem too with a leak at the rear seal.I saw that the nose had been damaged before , probably dropped, which caused damage to the oil and it could not seal properly.I had the inside reamed out and a modern seal matched to the new circumferences and the problem is solved.
The gearbox has two support bushes at the rear , make sure they are not worn , which will damage the seal chop-chop.
That is all I can think of.
Regards
Jan.

Your'e welcome Franklin. I see I left the word 'seal' out of the sentence in the previous reply.
One other problem I had is that the o/drive started kicking in and out when engaged, I took out the washer behind the o/d switch on the right side of the gearbox in front so the switch screwed in deeper , was probably worn a bit. No problem after that.
