Hello everyone, I can't believe that this hasn't been asked before, but a search had zero results. Does anyone have any recommendations for Gearbox and Overdrive oil? The Factory manual states Shell Super Motor Oil. -- 1725cc Alpine engined Series 3 Rapier convertible, with overdrive (obviously).-- Thank you, enjoy your driving. |

I'm sure my manual says engine oil (20W/50).

No doubt: 20W50 will do! I myself use Castrol Classic oil.

Thanks, yes I was thinking maybe there was a better modern equivalent, more gearbox ‘centric’ so to speak. But as I say, my Rootes light vehicle 1725cc Factory manual specifies engine oil viscosity against temperature, but for the gearbox just says Shell Super Motor Oil. I guess I’ll just stick with the engine oil (I’ve been using Millers). Thanks again. Terry |

I too think it sounds counter-intuitive to use engine oil in the gearbox, given the shearing forces it will be subject to- but it's what the handbook says! I've used the Miller overdrive oil in the overdrive gearbox of a Vauxhall Ventora (installed in a Vauxhall Sports Hatch- 1976) with no problems, but don't know who made that o/d unit... ATB David |
