I agree with you David, costs of events in general are killing local shows etc.
There is a reasonably good show in May which is free to enter for clubs, but very expensive for traders and visiting members of the public and as a result numbers have dwindled over recent years.
On the flip side, the Thornfalcon meet that I had a look at this year is free to all and gets a huge attendance.
Like you say I think there needs to be a sensible level set depending on what is available at the even (autojumble etc) to ensure value for money is fair.

Hello, thanks for your comments about my H120 (Jessica), the car in the background is a 2.0 Opel Ascona - I was chatting to the owner (or he was chatting to me!) about the virtues of electronic ignition I,m sorry but I can't remember what year it was and none of the photo's I have of that day show the reg' plate. I'm glad you agree with me regarding some shows - we all know how much time effort money and sometimes heartache we put into our cars and it gall's me when I see people being robbed to come and look at them, I mean a few bob for a charity is one thing but last summer one we went to(Lord Toffee Nose!)was charging £10 entrance fee! you dont have to be Carol Vorderman to work out what that's going to cost a family. I really like your idea of an informal gathering in Brisol (I bought Jessica in Shepton Mallet so you may have seen her there) we have something similar on a thursday night at Lord Stones cafe in Carlton in Cleveland but it's a bit of the beaten track for Joe Public, still I'm going to try and be a bit more active at our local motor club this year and it looks like I will be SROC LAO as well so fingers crossed I can get something organised next summer Best Regards

Lovely photos from back in August, your H120 looks superb. I agree with your comments about shows, Once a month there is an informal gathering of classic cars in the Centre of Bristol on Sunday mornings between 9:00 am till about 12:00 am Sometimes ten cars turn up sometimes fifty it's nice for members of the public as they're out walking there dogs or jogging and they stop for a chat about the cars on show.
Just out of curiosity David is that red car in the background in one of your pics a MK1 Cavalier or Opel Ascona?

Hi Dave, I don't think you have an attitude problem, I agree with you in all aspects you mentioned.car shows should be fun and made easy for all to attend. We have a show at our ski boat club locally once a year just for club funds, charge the adults R10 and children R5 at the gate .We use the funds during the year for whatever we feel like or what's needed. We get invited regularly to attend different functions ( free ) where we park our cars to show. It is interesting to note how many Dave's are involved with old cars ! I think there are Dave's on all the forums I have visited too.Our secretary is Dave Watkins and he has a personal showroom in his factory with around 35 old vehicles he owns - all old beauties .The one wall has cabinets filled with scale model old cars. |

Hi Jan, Well I have to say that doesn’t seem to be the case in England, apart from those with a genuine interest who would like a closer look inside or under the bonnet, people tend to keep their distance and respect the cars. Actually this is probably my favourite venue as it’s one of the few we go to where we take the cars to the public (for free) and not the other way around, and your car is not parked in a field. When I first got the car I was really keen to take it to shows but after three “summer seasons” as it where I am getting a little wiser. Around where I live there are a number of shows whereby “Lord Toffee Nose” opens up a field in his mansion grounds, charges me £2.00 to exhibit my car and the public £5.00 (or in some cases more) to come and look at it!! And, whilst he graciously allows us into his kitchen to pay £2.50 for a slice of bacon and a bun if we need the toilet (and as we are there all day we will) we can use those terrible portable ones which are bad enough for blokes never mind ladies. And if (ha ha this is England) it’s been raining often as not it’s soon a mudbath, Also these places are often of the beaten track and many elderly people who would really appreciate these vehicles and enjoy the memories they bring cannot get there (lack of transport, cost’s etc) and loose out. Don’t get me wrong I’m not tight and I don’t think I’m uncharitable but I hate being robbed or being made a mug (fool). I’m happy to support village fete’s etc or to help charities but I am going to be choosy from now on and will avoid a number ( Newby Hall for one) of shows next summer, I wonder if anyone else thinks this way or do I have an attitude problem? !! Best Regards

I think people are using you gyus cars as mirrors ! My old dog has a few fleas & tics. I would not park your cars near a shopping centre in South Africa, some people can't even drive grocery trolleys here & will probably put a wooden crate down on your bonnet while they rest and browse... Would be interesting to place a brand new H120 next to yours and have a 'spot the difference' competition. ( close the odometer ) I am sure there will be no oil drops under the engine as well. Nice ! |

At least you were flying the flag David and I always find people are very interested to see Rapiers, especially fastbacks as they either don't know what it is or haven't seen one in years.
They're also fed up with seeing boring old triumph TR's and MG's.
(I might have made that last bit up!)

Here's a couple of photo's from the classics on the moor show in Sheffield, sadly she was the only Sunbeam of any kind there, not even a 2 seater Alpine or old Sunbeam Talbot.
Regards Etc
