Umm,life's never as simple as it first appears. Thanks for the advice it's clear my previous choices are inappropriate so I think 165/80 is the best option,subject to availability and price. Thanks for the input. Regards John |

Yes, facelift Ser IV & V went to 13" wheels - now manufacturers are going the other way; getting bigger! Arches on Series bodyshell were really made for 15" wheels IMHO. Anyway, re tyre sizes, yes, you'll have to be carefull, not only body fowling, heavey steering, but rolling radius that could put speedo well out. I think tyres were radial equivalent size 145/13 perhaps 155/13 which are 80 profile, so I wouldn't go any lower than 70 profile in which case you'd need to step up to 165 or 175 to keep same rolling radius. If going to 60/65 profile then you'd be up to 185/195 & I'd think these would be too wide. Above only my experiences with Fastback where I too like JPSH120 went 165/13 to 185/70 13 without any problems, save for a bit of rubbing on tie rods on full lock. Cheers. Glen. |

I thought series rapiers all had 15 inch wheels??
Anyway, regarding your tyres, whatever size you decide on make sure the overall diameter of the wheel + tyre stays as close as possible to the original to make sure gearing and speedo readings are not affected too much.
The 2 sizes you suggest give 540mm and 512mm diameter so quite a difference, so be careful what you do decide on.
If its any help, my fastback should have 165/80/13 and I use 185/70/13 which is a big improvement on handling etc.

Hi all, The restoration of my SIV rolls on and I have now turned my attention to new tyres.All five tyres have plenty of tread and appear almost 'new' but I have had the car 10 years and so replacement is a must.I am wondering what the best choice of profile is to give optimum ride and roadholding. I've been doing a bit it more research on tyre sizes and think that either 175/60/13 or 165/55/13 will do good job.I suspect that the range of tyre sizes available now is much greater than those specified in the 1960s but is such a choice likely to cause any problems with clearances etc.etc.I would expect the steering to be a bit heavier but is this significant? Any comments would be appreciated. Regards johnc |
