If it was running before it will probably be a simple fix.

After changing a head gasket likely causes are:
1 - Valve clearances too tight - so no compression.
2 - Ignition timing.
3 - Ignition leads connected in the wrong order.
4 - Distributor fitted 180 degrees out.

These are all mistakes I've made in the past

Do you have a factory workshop manual? These are really good and worth having. I've got one on the shelf upstairs if you need one.

Don't give up - maybe one of us is close enough to come and help with this one. Where in the country are you?

thanks for the info worked out from the trim plate sfs 626585 she was Foam white and Pipin red so thats what she will be returning to and the vin number indicates she orginally had a 1600cc engine with overdrive so maybe at a later date I'll retun her to that to if funds stretch to that

You should have plate on the bonnet lock platform that has 'WHEN ORDERING PARTS PLEASE QUOTE' printed on it.
This plate also lists your chassis number and colour code.

Hi Andy,
The 1592 was replaced by 1725 in 1965, just before the Arrow cars (Hunter and Fastback Rapier) were introduced in 1966/1967.
It was fitted to the last of the Audax and Superminx cars (Alpine Series V, Rapier Series V, Singer Gazelle Series VI, Humber Sceptre Mk II, Hillman Super Minx IV, and Hillman Minx VI).
The Hillman and Singer engines generally have cast iron cylinder heads, while the Sunbeam and Humber generally get the alloy head and twin carbs.

The engine number will tell what the engine is from. Have a look at http://www.team.net/www/rootes/chassis.html

The gearbox could be the original or it might have come with the engine.
