Cheers!! That may well answer it, I have just found a Hunter shaped Singer auto for spares, logbook says 1725 but it has an iron head and single carb. Car looks all original and not messed with.

Thanks for the info folks.

That type of 1500 always has a iron head, never aluminium.

The block is the same. The crank, rods, pistons and cam are different from 1500 to 1725.

If it's got an alloy head it's a 1725, if it's got an iron head its PROBABLY a 1500, but some low spec Hunter's (and Singers) got a 1725 with an iron head.

If the car was auto - should be 1725.
If the car has overdrive - should be a 1725.

I think the engine number should tell you - but I can't remember how to decode them at the moment

on the 1725 the dipstick fits directly into the block

No external differences on block as far as I know.
But I thought 1500's had Cast Iron heads rather than ali ones, but I could be wrong . If that is a general rule of thumb, then would be an easy spot: also inlet and exhaust valves are in different places to ali head - inners are swapped over I think. Anyway, that's my limited contribution

How do I identify a 1725cc engine from a 1500cc engine? Its in a Hunter shape car.
Are there any outward numbers, stampings to id them.
Cheers
