Afternoon All,

Just looking for some views; I am thinking about buying one of the new style starter motors and fitting to my Fastback. I have a new reconditioned old style one but I am finding especially in this cold weather a struggle to get the car started and it drains the battery pretty quickly.

Has anyone got one fitted already...does it make a big difference?>

If you mean pre-engaged instead of the inertia type - then yes I have changed to the new style. It gets rid of the horrible whirr-clunk noise and seems to be more efficient.

Me too.... cranks the engine over faster compared to the original 'ker-clunk' inertia type. Is a lot quieter too.

What spec or make/model of pre-engaged starter can be fitted??

The one I have came off of a Commer PB van and has the solenoid on the starter unit rather than the remote type of solenoid that in the case of the Rapier, is mounted on top of the inner wing. This is the normal arrangement for this type of starter. So you will need to extend the control wire from the ignition barrel so as it will reach to the starter, (mine was a couple of inches too short), and ideally you will also need to make up a continuous length of the heavy duty cable that provides the live feed from the battery (+ve) to the motor windings.

As a temporary measure you can get away with shorting it by moving the cable over on to the same lug as the cable from the battery on the existing solenoid that is mounted on the inner wing.

the cars that came to the states had the pre engaged lucas starter with the solenoid mounted on the starter. i would say it was used on other cars of the time period.

A bit expensive! My local factors were still doing exchange items for a lot cheaper: they were Lucas, but could have been made in Mombogomboland! So not sure what quality they were.

Most new Lucas stuff is made there these days. Wouldn't trust the brand anymore myself. NOS is best!

Hi Guys,

Got the new starter motor and I must say even though it is expensive I am a convert. This is a great bit of kit, turns the engine over with ease no horrible winey clunk and when your struggling to start your car it uses the battery 3x less than a standard.

I was always about using original nos parts but this little beauty has changed my mind!

Recommended.

Isn't what you have there the "High Torque starter motor", It differs from the Pre-engaged by Power consumed and the speed it turns the engine over. I've not seen one but reports from the States where they are becoming increasingly common are all good.

What might be of interest, I seem to remember years ago seeing a Rootes Buletin warning that when changing from the old type starter to the then new Pre-engaged to change the starter ring on the flywheel, The lead in on the teeth, for smooth engagement of the dog is on the opposite side and if it wasn't changed could cause jamming of the starter.
Never had to do it so have open mind.

All the Arrow/Hunter range switched over to pre-engaged starters in, I think, '74.

I've converted a couple of cars to these (a '68 and a '73), they bolt straight on. Just need to rearrange the wiring - just as Arrocuda wrote.

I never had any trouble with the ring gear.

I had a lot of trouble with my old starter and slow cranking when hot.I overhauled the starter and checked all the normal stuff that goes wrong, but no luck - I just fitted a new starter exactly like the original and it starts first turn now, any time. Conclusion - the starters become cooked from the heat from the exhaust and years of service.
The new type starters are cool, but pricey.
