How long have you owned UMU, was it in the same condition when you bought it or have you done anything to it?
Looks very nice, I hope to see it in the flesh (or metal) soon!

Hey alright buddy?
Unfortunatly, I bought it in this condition, externally. However i have tarted up the interior and overhauled the mechanics, including engine rebulid (which i had a local garage do for me), i had them uprate it to 1.9, fit flat top pistons and lighten the flywheel.
Whilst the engine was out i resprayed the engine bay and cleaned everything up and then refitted the engine. Also recently i took out the interior and fitted some soundproofing and an extra layer of carpet.
Id really like to meet up when possible, ill let you know when im next in the area with the 'beam'
Cheers

Ah, I'm going to have a go at spraying my engine bay when the engine is out of the way, you'll have to give me some tips!
I figure that I can't really lose anything having a go myself and if I take my time should be able to achieve a good result.

Yeah i figured if it went wrong, id just shut the bonnet. ha.
My starting point was to find the closest colour match or aerosol paint, which for mine was metallic grey for a peugoet 405.
Then i removed the bonnet.
I then degreased the bay by using and scrubbing on 'Gunk' i think its called and then pressure washed it off. Once i was happy there was no remaining oil or grease i started sanding.
For the bay i sanded by hand, using sand paper. I easily get bored of sanding and so im sure i could have spend more time here. But i made sure i went back til everything was smooth. If i found patches of surface rust then i removed it and smothed the area. If you do have rusty bits then go over then with 'rust remedy'. Mask around the engine bay, i taped newspaper to the lips of the bay, so they fung over the wings, screen, etc.
Then i applied primer, you dont need to much of this and it dried within minutes, so i could get on quickly. After 2-3 coats, i sanded with wet and dry paper, just to make sure everything is as smooth as it could be.
I then gave between 3-5 coats of colour paint, not putting to much on with each coat, i realised that its better to use more coats and to avoid runs!!! Once happy, applied 3-5 coats of clear coat/laquer. When your doing this it doesnt seem to make much difference, but after polishing i think it really did.
Once dry/ next morning polish back, hard with either tcut or a good polish, and enjoy!!
For underneath the bonnet, i had more surface rust so i used an angle grinder with wirebrush head. I was very careful not to allow the bonnet to get hot when grinding, because any defects on the top side could not be an option.
Once derusted and 'rust remedy' applied, put on the primer. Then i used undercoat, from a spray can. I thought it would look good, being black and give some insulation against the drumming.
I only put on 2 coats and as it goes on quite thick, that a good coat. Left it to dry, which does take a couple of days really and done.
It took me a minute or 2 to get used to spraying the underseal, use a test piece of cardboard first.
Other than that, keep the spray strokes even and parellel and dont put too much on with each coat.
Good luck, hope this helps

and sanded the bay, used a coat of primer, around 3-5 coats of colour and finished with 2-3 coats of clear coat.
I found that the clear coat gave the paint some depth.

Interesting that you also tackled the underside of the bonnet, I'd like to do that too but mine has the original matting stuck to it which will be a pig to get off!
I've found someone who can mix the paint for me to match so hopefully it will look good when its finished.

My granddad's rapier also has the original matting, or something similar to it. He resprayed it with something like your undercoat. But he refitted it whit 2 round bars, flat at the end, and riveted to the hood on the end! It looks nice, the only thing that can annoy me sometimes. It hangs loose at the ends...or not quite as neat as it should be... Pictures are always interesting, that way I can get some more ideas for my car...

Hey interesting comment. Whats your car like then. are there any photos anywhere for us to see.
Really pleased to hear your so enthusiastic about these cars. Do you mind me asking how old you are as you sound as young as me, if not younger!!
Rapier fastbacks run in my family too, with my Grandad, dad and me all having one or more. cheers

Hi All, I had a problem with the matting or insulation under the bonnet too - it kept falling off!- I tried sticking it back on with various things but it wouldn't work so I took the plunge and ripped it all off then scrubbed under the bonnet with methalated spirit using those little foam pan scrubbers to shift all the glue etc (took me ages)then I painted it with smooth dark mettalic Hammerite using a brush and it was the darndest thing, the brush marks smoothed out and the colour is almost an exact match in fact no-one has ever noticed unless I pointed it out!

@ UMU My car is '68 fastback, I 've posted about it on the forum. http://www.sunbeamrapier.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=237 My granddad gave me the opportunity to choose a car, and because the rapier will make a nice daily driver and was just standing there in the back of the garage. I took my choise. It only needs some work done to it...
I'm only 15 years old. But I've been working on our cars alone since I've had the age of 13. But I've been in the garage with my dad and grand dad passing spanners and other since I've been 10 or younger.
By the way, your car is a real example for me... A nice car with beautiful wheels, color and road clearance (I like a car that doesn't have to much room between the wheelarches and tyre)
The car my dad drove me home in, when I was born, was a Triumph Stag MK2 so, you can aesily say I've almost been born in an old car.
We also have a few alpines and some other triumphs.

Hey Thomas
I kinda replied on the other thread, but thought it would be best to reply on this one too.
In the photo your car looks pretty sound, with really good bodywork - ive heard before that the better a car is when you start to restore it, the better the finish will be, so looks like your on to something with this one.
Godd luck bud
