I read mr Tony Fearns reply in general chat regarding the series Sunbeam guys and I was reminded of something that happened to me when I was 15. My first car was a tough 1960 Hillman Minx that I had resprayed gunston with a white stripe running through the centre - a weber carb and Alfa rims, and all the other appies envied me.I started my trade as steam fitter at that time. The head gasket blew and I decided I was going to repair it myself. After that the head gasket blew twice more in quick sucession, and I phoned one of those strict wise ser rapier mechanics. and he came over and helped me .I was told to do the job and he would watch. When I started tearing the copper 'protective plate ' off around the new gasket, he freaked out and asked me 'what the hell are you doing boy ?' I thought the copper plate was there to protect the gasket from being damaged in the shop....I think if he was my father I would have gotten a hiding . |
