Hello,

I'm just thinking about budgets for some bigger jobs in the coming year (or years!).

Could anyone give me a clue how much to rebuild a gearbox? The synchromesh is beginning to fail. Luckily only on the first three gears! The overdrive seems ok.

I have no workshop so I'll have to engage someone.

Also, the cost to get new shock inserts fitted to the front struts.

Thanks for any comments.

Mike.

The man you need to speak to about your gearbox is John Roseby, well known rootes gearbox guru! I'll send you his email address so you can get in touch. Out of interest, do you know what oil is in your gearbox? It needs to be as close as possible to original spec and detergent free.

As for the strut inserts it's a relatively straightforward job, as long as you have some spring compressors you can do it yourself.

Thanks Jason,

I'll send Mr. Roseby a message.

The gearbox oil is engine oil. 20W50. I think the last top up was some Halfords Classic. Something I hadn't noticed before, when I checked it this Spring it seemed a little frothy!

Can I get uprated or adjustable inserts do you know? And the second half, where to get them? I found a couple of companies online that offer a rebuild service - Gaz and Leda. I'm waiting to hear back from them, but if I can get just the inserts I don't mind getting my hands dirty.

Now speedy spares have sadly gone it's slightly more difficult to find parts, but luckily ebay is pretty good. These inserts would be good for you ;

I think you might be able to find something different from Spax with a bit of searching but probably not really necessary for normal road use.
