Something we rarely consider but when we do the idea of the rear axle locking up sends a wave of fear down one's spine. If the gubbins in the middle of the axle breaks a tooth and locks the differential on the motorway we can imagine the mess it would make and hope it will never happen. Most of us watch for rear oil leaks and have changed the oil at some stage so thanks to the tough Rootes design we rarely hear of broken diffs or noisy axles amongst club members. Over the years I haven't been asked for these parts much but slowly as people have ordered axle shafts or other components I have had to check on the interchangeability. There are plenty of combinations so below will be my attempt to make sense of it all.

Series 1 Rapier axle shaft 5220305 (17 spline) (Spiral bevel diff) code on end of shaft B
Series 2 as above
Series 3 as above up to B3011642
Series 3 5220335 0/S (17 spine) (Hypoid diff) from B3011643 to B3055142 code on shaft C
Series 3 5220336 N/S (17 spline) (Hypoid diff) from B3011643 to B3055142 code on shaft A
Series 3A /4 5220525 O/S from B3055143 through to ser 4 (Hypoid diff) (25 spline) code on shaft H
Series 3A/4 5220526 N/S from B3055143 through to ser 4 (Hypoid diff) (25 spline) code on shaft D
Series 5 5220958 O/S From b32500001 (25 spline) (Hypoid diff)
Series 5 5220959 N/S From B32500001 (Hypoid diff) (25 spline)

rear wheel bearing has integral oil seal on this last version, on the minx 1966 it also has deeper hub and the spacer plate attached to the brake drum is no longer fitted, the drums fitted are no longer "dished". To summarise the outer axle parts on 1966 minx & gazelle are different to earlier models. On rapier Super minx Scpetre the outer bearing is different but they keep the older style drum. The minx gazelle 5 have a spacer attached to the rear drum to provide a wider rear track. this is acheived on the 1966 models by changing hub and drums. So this hub and drums set up is unique to 1966 minx gazelle models and provides a wider rear track.

these above halfshafts/ rear axle casings are also fitted to the equivalent year Singer Gazelle or Hillman Minx

There is a 2 prong prop shaft flange used around 1962/3 it has an odd 4 holed flying saucer type Universal Joint pt no. 5039500 it is used on some models of Rapier 3A B3054836 up to B3059472 and equivalent period Singer Vogue Hillman Super Minx Mk 1 and Mk 2 this odd shaped flange means there are 2 types of differentials for the same axle/halfshaft/casing combination. The diffs would be interchangeable but the flange would need to be swopped over by a specialist or the propshaft swapped over with it's own matching differential.
