Has anyone used Heldite jointing compound on their Rapier, and if so, was it a good thing to do?

Yup - there are definately still going, still building Rapier engines and manufacturing new parts for them. |

Hi Tony,
Not sure why we all signed up with made up names. It's a sort of tradition on forums - same as on CB radio.
Never used Heldite but it looks useful for fuel tanks and such. I doubt if it could stand up to the pounding it would take in the combustion chamber. I'd bite the bullet and get the head skimmed or rewelded. When I had same trouble (1990) I got Holbay (the chaps responsible for 'H' in "Sunbeam Rapier H120") to reweld the affected areas, they also made sure all the combustion chambers were the correct size and the head was flat - all for two hundred quid.
They did such a nice job that I went back to them to build an engine for my current restoration project (p.s. Holbay are called Coltec now).

Hello Jim, and it's nice to use a proper name to reply to.
I've just looked at the members 'names' and still there's only me calling myself, myself.
Is there something I should know about this??
Perhaps G's mechanic will come up with a list of things that Heldite is useful for, but I thought it might be worth considering at cylinder-head-gasket replacement.
When I did the IIIA last year there was a modicum of corrosion around the valve pockets and perhaps, if the blurb is true, Heldite might be just the thing I need for next time.
Meanwhile, I'd like to wish all the forum members:-

What exactly do you want to use it for? I've heard its very good at sealing damaged containers...ie petrol tanks, split radiator tanks etc. I've not personally had any experiance though.
