Hi, Wonder if anyone can help.

This may seem as a silly question to most, but Im still new to Sunbeams ! I have recently finnished an Anglia project, then came accross the beauty that is the Sunbeam Rapier II.

First mission is to sort oil leaks for roadworthy certificate.

Oil straems out from behind the crang pully.
I stripped off the pully, and to my surprise there is no shaft seal!!

I pulled of the timing chain cover, and theres no housing for a shaft seal

My quetsion is what sort of seal or packing is normally used.

I'm not keen to do any wild modifications, as i would like to keep her in origanal form.

any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Stuart

Hi Stuart, welcome to the wonderful world of Rapiers.
There is no oil seal in the timing cover, oil leakage is supposed to be prevented by a thrower plate and scrolled grooves on the pulley shaft.
It is essential that the cover be located absolutely centrally on the pulley shaft. To do this fit the cover with bolts only finger tight and then wrap the pulley shaft in masking tape built up in single layers with no overlap so as to fit the cover hole exactly.
Fit the pulley and then tighten the cover bolts, remove the pulley and the tape, ensure the scroll grooves are clean and then refit.
This should prevent excess oil leakage but some is still not unusual particularly if the cover has been poorly fitted in the past and the hole is worn.Rootes did make a special tool to centralise the cover but these are almost impossible to find nowadays.

Best of luck.
Regards
John

Just spotted an alignment tool on e bay uk at nearly £50.00!! masking tape is a tad cheaper
