Hi,my engine ran out of oil. Got a sudden knocking noise exactly in time with the revs, I tried putting oil in but no change in the noise. Iv'e taken the sump off but I can see or feel no real movement in any of the big ends and the crank bearings seem fine. Should I feel any big end movement? Any ideas before I start stripping and replacing big end shells. Its a 72 fastback auto. Cheers.

Not sure on the checking situation, but if you've run completely out of oil; I would have thought it will have to be strip down, but there are more mechanically knowledgeable than me on the forum. Bad news indeed; but they do like to burn a drop in later life; at least normally you know there's a bit of extract UCL going in, but you need to check it very regularly. G.
