I've reached the final mechanical hurdle on the restoration of my SIV,the exhaust!
When removed some 10 years ago the stainless steel exhaust,in good condition,appeared to fit OK,apart from some damage to the front box where an obstacle had been struck.
I have come to refit it and no matter what I do the pipe from the front box to the rear fouls the body.It seems the damage to the front box may have bent the downpipe upwards slightly thus realigning the whole of the exhaust.
I cannot re-bend the pipe due to its strength and having no suitable equipment.
I first considered fitting a section of flexible pipe after the front box to realign the remainder but have just began to wonder what would be the result of removing the front box completely.
Would the increase in noise be unacceptable?Would performance be affected?
Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks for that.It sounds that reducing the system to a single box is the answer as I do have spare pipes to make up the section where the front box would be.

Hi John.
I made up the exhaust manifold myself on my ser 3 to suit twin sidie webers, basically it is a 4 into one setup , then there is a expansion joint under near the starter motor, and one box only at the back.The sound is pleasant , actually very quiet when coasting and pleasant when pushing it, and the performance is good. The webers make more noise than the exhaust actually !  I never bothered to get too technical like measuring volumes etc. The 1725cc and 1600cc engine is very forgiving and not too fussy, so I guess you will be ok as long as you do not go to an overly large diameter pipe, which could affect your performance - you know the myth about bigger pipe bigger voom - if you like you can google 'thumper talk' on the net under the heading ' exhaust back pressure' - interesting facts about gas flow , volume, velocity and scavenging.
