Is it possible to remove the steering box (for engine bay re-spray) without taking the steering column out too?

I guess it is possible but how fiddly is it??

It's comes apart easily but the worst part would be putting it back. You have to reassemble all the internals of the steering box (shims, nut and ball bearings) and then probably adjust it too. I wouldn't do it.

The complete unit with column is really easy to remove if you have an early car with the ignition on the dash. With the later cars you have to remove the steering lock from the column (which means drilling off the bolt heads) - or extend the hole in the floor to allow the steering lock through (something I've done in the breaker's yard with a hacksaw).
