Just wanted to get a few views from members. Due to an eye watering insurance renewal for my Alfa I'm seriously considering using my Alpine Fastback for everyday driving. This would involve a short 3 mile commute most days with the odd 18 mile commute as well as some 80 mile runs to the coast (maybe once a month). The car is pretty much original and runs well. I would consider some mods to make it more practical. It would also be garaged every night.
Anyone have any experience of using their Fastback daily?
Thanks
Patrick

Dynax wax protection everywhere. Regular fluid level checks and changes. A good set of modern tyres.
Carry a few spare gaskets as mentioned.
Hows your fuel tank for the dreaded internal flaking?

I use my kack-hander on a fairly regular basis for a commute to Bournemouth from Wilts & also when visiting the stores at Banbury. I keep a good supply of spares in the boot and a basic tool-kit, but so far not needed them. Only had one recent incident, but on the whole they're fine in everyday use, but I do get a bit concerned when the traffic queues, but I have the advantage of being able to do my driving outside of peak hours. Posted - 11 Feb 2016 : 08:35:32 Hey Padraig,
I'd reccomend investing in lots of hammerite and waxoil to protect the underside, just thin it down with the oil from each service and splosh it on liberally, that way it'll keep the rust at bay!
The other steps i'd recommend are; 1. change the oil regularly, check all the service points regularly (every year should be fine) 2. upgrade the ignition system to a full electronic control system to get rid of those horrible nasties (including upgrading to modern plugs and leads) - Use AccuSpark in Hemel Hempstead, they have everything you will need for this and they are not expensive (use discount code SR10 for 10% curtsy of me) 3. get yourself a carb re-build kit, this shouldn't be too expensive and you'll need one before too long as they tend to slowly drift off tune with age.... don't we all! but just replacing gaskets and seals makes a world of difference!
So there you go, my top 4 suggestions can all be done for under £100 and should prolong the life of your cracking car, use it, and enjoy it!!! |

Posted - 10 Feb 2016 : 23:55:16 Hi,I think it's very possible and I have thought of it on many occasions. It actually does the car good to run regularly as long as you don't miss the mod cons and avoid the salt in winter. Good luck what ever you decide, Andy |
