Hi Folks Ihve aquired a gear box which I have ben told is from a early sixties Ser Rapier I hope to overhaul it and use it, The numbers are as follows on the g/box casing 301 62 11DA15778 1980643 Can any one tell me is this is a ser gearbox with no synchro on 1st and reverse Thanks Dec
The number 301 62 suggest a date which is the 30th of January 1962 which makes it a gearbox with no synchromesh on the first gear which you can check by looking in what direction you have to move the gear stick in order to put it in reverse. Seen from the drivers position and with no synchromesh on first gear you have to move the gearstick to the left and then backwards (of course this is with a RHD car, while with a LHD car you have to move the gearstick to the right resp. backwards). On reverse there exists never a synchromesh!
Reading my post again I see I made a stupid mistake which is: of course there is no difference between LHD and RHD when it regards the direction in which the gearstick has to move in order to reach the reverse position. The only difference is that in a RHD car one uses the left hand while in a LHD car the right hand is used. Which makes driving a RHD car for me very odd. Sorry about my error!
