Hi All, I’ve just bought a Rapier series V, the engine number is not the same as in the logbook, how do you identify a 1725 engine from the outside? Or can you identify it by the number? Which is R5 ABE 5L 107809 I think it’s an L in the middle, it looks a bit like an upside down 7!
Any help will be much appreciated.
Cheers Tone.

Thanks guys, it does look like it’s a 1725 engine, it also has a alloy head. It’s just that I can’t make head or tail of the engine number.
Cheers Tone

On a 1600 engine the dipstick does go into a tube, but the tube then goes down to the sump.

Just another check to confirm.

I already explained how one can sort out if a 1725 cc engine is installed: just look at the oil dipstick which is very easy to see.
Indeed the 1725 cc engine has a 5 bearing crank shaft, but to check how many oil gallery plugs are involved is not as easy as just looking at the oil dipstick....so why should one make it more difficult than is needed?

Regards,

Peter

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe only the 1725 had a five bearing crank. Check how many oil gallery plugs there are on the right hand side of the engine(one will be where the oil pressure switch is fitted) If there are five then it's a 1725.

Remember that the later block could be an iron head 1496cc,
But that is easily checked with a magnet.

Sometimes I think laterally, but then I have to get up!

You can separate a 1592 cc engine from a 1725 cc engine by looking at the dipstick, in a 1725 cc engine the dipstick is going directly in the engine block while the dipstick in a 1592 cc engine is going in a kind of metal thin pipe which is placed on the engine block.
The number you mention does not make any sense to me at all!

Regards,

Peter
